NIE number:
Applying for a NIE number is mandatory in Spain, if you will stay in Spain for more than 3 months (you will then be considered as a resident). You also need a NIE number for every economic activity in Spain (buying a house in Spain, buying a car and opening a bank account.
The NIE number stands for Numero de Identificación de Extranjero and is comparable to the Citizen Service Number in the UK.
Where do I apply for a NIE number?
You can apply for the NIE number at the Spanish embassy in the UK or country of residence, but if you need the NIE number in the short term, this is not the fastest option.
In Spain you can apply for the NIE number at the Oficina de Extranjeria (immigration service) or Comisaría de policía (appointed police station of the National Police), depending on which municipality you are staying in.
What do I need to apply for a NIE number? To apply for a NIE number you need the following:
- Recent passport size photo.
- Completed and signed EX-15 form.
- Copy of passport.
- Proof of payment of the taxes.
